The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has decided to hold a series of protests in all the district headquarters of Garo Hills to demand for a Winter Capital in Tura.
The first phase of the protests began at Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills by holding a signature campaign.
AHAM president Georgeprince Ch Momin in a press release said that the signature campaign is to awaken the people of Garo Hills of the rights and privileges of being the rightful citizen of Meghalaya.
“The forefathers of our state while carving out the state thought of the idea of having two sessions for Meghalaya- the Winter Capital in Tura and the summer capital in Shillong. However, even after 50 years of statehood, the people of Garo Hills have yet to see it become a reality,” he said.
Until and unless the winter session is implemented in Garo HIlls and all offices attached to it such as the Governor’s House, Additional Secretariat, the Winter Assembly, the quarter for the MLAs, the Joint Directorates, etc function from Garo Hills, the AHAM president said agitation would continue over time.
However, the association was hopeful that the MDA Government would address the matter and urged the people of Garo Hills to unite for the issue and raise their voices together as one. “It is high time that people of Garo Hills come together to fight for their rights irrespective of caste, creed, religion and sex, etc,” AHAM added.
