Shillong, Dec 22: After first unsuccessfully demanding that she resign, teacher and student groups of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) now want the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the varsity’s Tura campus to assume charge at the NEHU headquarters here.
It was only last Tuesday that NEHU’s Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and others asked Prof FK Marak to resign as Pro-VC in light of the continuing administrative crisis plaguing the university. They had, at that point, just forced the Shillong Pro-VC, Prof Sumarbin Umdor, to quit. The groups said that as the Pro-VCs were unable to function independently, it was better for the university that they resign.
However, opposition to Marak’s resignation emerged loud and clear from students’ associations on the Tura campus, who resolved not to allow her to resign.
Today, NEHUTA, NEHUSU and others changed tack, calling on Marak to assume charge of the university from its Shillong headquarters as NEHU’s Vice-Chancellor has been absent for more than a year and there is no Registrar either.
The associations cited NEHU Statute 2(A)(5)(i) to urge the senior-most Pro-VC, Marak, to ensure continuity of administration. They requested her to assume charge within 24 hours “failing which the undersigned bodies shall be constrained to explore further appropriate courses of action.”
