Shillong, Aug 14: Afforestation in the area around the Shillong Peak Ropeway Cable Car Project at Raid Laban Reserve Forests and Raid Laban Forest is possible.
This was stated by the Meghalaya High Court-appointed special officers during a hearing on Thursday.
A division bench of Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh heard the two special officers—Advocate General Amit Kumar and Senior Advocate Kaustav Paul—who had visited the site where large-scale and indiscriminate felling of trees in Lawsohtun was reported.
“It is heartening to hear from them that afforestation in the area around the project is possible,” the court said and asked the special officers to file a report.
The special officers also sought time to make further inspection and inquiry before they file a comprehensive report on the prospect and extent of afforestation in the vicinity.
The next hearing has been scheduled on September 2, 2025.
