Shillong, Jan 27: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed that the state government is examining whether it can add some Inner Line Permit (ILP)-like provisions to the Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025.
Tynsong today informed reporters that the matter has been referred to the state’s Advocate General.
On the issue of the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) 2016, the Deputy CM said that the law is being partly implemented. According to him, under the MRSSA the district taskforces have been constituted, headed by Deputy Commissioners.
Tynsong said that the inability to make the entry-exit points functional means that the state cannot fully implement the MRSSA. The constitutionality of the checkpoints was challenged and the courts took a dim view of their legal justification.
An MRSSA amendment bill was then passed by the Assembly, but the then Governor referred it to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs where it still sits.
“Legally speaking we cannot set up entry exit points because there is no provision in the original form of the MRSSA (2016), Tynsong said.
