Shillong, Feb 21: The West Garo Hills district administration has issued an advisory directing Local Area Development Committees (LADCs) under Tura Urban to ensure strict compliance with guidelines concerning migrant labourers engaged in construction works.
District Magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal said in view of the ongoing situation in the district, the LADCs have been instructed to hold meetings within their jurisdictions to brief residents about recent incidents and organise awareness programmes to sensitise youth on the prevailing situation.
“Labourers and skilled workers engaged in building and road construction projects in both private and government sectors must not be obstructed, as these projects are time-bound and require completion within stipulated deadlines,” Aggarwal said.
The District Magistrate also said that all migrant labourers engaged in construction activities must be registered with the Labour Department in accordance with the Meghalaya Identification Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020.
Meanwhile, local police have been authorised to verify the antecedents of migrant workers, while the Labour Department has been directed to coordinate with the state to ensure proper recording and registration of verified workers.
