Divisions came to the forefront of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) today, with Pyndap Saibon, the apparent president of the party, denouncing KHNAM MLA Adelbert Nongrum for allegedly claiming the top role in the peripheral outfit.
Nongrum had recently said that KHNAM will field a candidate in the by-election to the vacant Mawryngkneng Assembly seat. Today Saibon said he was “surprised and shocked” that Nongrum supposedly referred to himself as the party president.
This is a clear attempt by the North Shillong MLA to mislead the public, Saibon said. There is an internal party dispute about who really is in charge of the party, of which Nongrum is its sole legislator, which the Election Commission has yet to sort out.
Until the EC does, Nongrum has no authority to make any such claims, Saibon declared.
Nongrum had supposedly resigned from the party as a central executive member in July 2018 and later wrote to the EC claiming to have been elected president. The matter then went to court.
