Shillong, Feb 6: North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum has urged the state government to redevelop and upgrade the Meghalaya House at Vellore, citing its dilapidated condition and inadequate facilities.
In a letter to General Administration Department Minister Sosthenes Sohtun, Nongrum stated that the facility, which serves as a medical support centre for patients from Meghalaya seeking treatment at CMC Vellore, is in a pathetic state.
Nongrum, who stayed at the facility, said the authorities’ claim of seven apartments with 18 rooms is misleading and, in reality, there are only five apartments.
He emphasised that the few rooms available are insufficient to cater to the patients’ needs and a new building with at least 30-40 rooms is required.
The government has initiated steps to reconstruct the Meghalaya House, which is only around a decade old, and Nongrum sought an update on the status.
He stressed that the facility should be safe, hygienic and equipped with essential amenities like Wi-Fi and improved parking.
Nongrum expressed his willingness to contribute Rs 50 lakh from the Special Urban Works Programme (SUWP) 2025-26 to support the redevelopment efforts.
