The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the right-wing student organisation affiliated to the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, has demanded appointment of a permanent Vice Chancellor in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
In a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the Visitor of the University, the ABVP said since the post of VC has been lying vacant since September 23, 2020 and the absence of the full time VC will deter the smooth functioning and growth of university.
It may be mentioned that the Ministry of Education on September 22, 2020 has extended the tenure of Prof SK Srivastava as VC of NEU for a period of one year.
ABVP State Secretary, Nibiang Sumer said there is an urgency and the need of a full time VC to steer and lead the university in the right direction.
Sumer said that more than 5,000 students are receiving education in 44 departments of NEHU and stated that there are academic and administrative challenges that university is facing in absence of a Vice Chancellor.
