Shillong, Aug 5:Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma refused to confirm or deny rumours of an imminent cabinet reshuffle today, stating, “I have no comments right now. When the time is appropriate, if there is anything, I will definitely let it be known.”
Speculation has triggered intense discussions within the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), a coalition partner holding a single cabinet berth through Shakliar Warjri, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs.
As the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government approaches midway through its five-year term, HSPDP insiders revealed that the party has been deliberating how to share its cabinet spot between its two MLAs, with Methodius Dkhar, the other HSPDP legislator, keen on becoming a minister.
The possibility of a reshuffle has also sparked interest across other partners in the ruling alliance, with MLAs without portfolios from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), United Democratic Party (UDP) and Sangma’s own National People’s Party (NPP) reportedly seeking inclusion.
Although no formal communication has been issued by the CM’s office, many believe the reshuffle could take shape as early as September. The MDA leadership has kept its cards close to the chest, refusing to make any definitive statement on the matter.
As the coalition’s halfway milestone approaches, the coming months may see heightened political maneuvering as leaders balance internal demands, maintain stability and manage expectations within their parties.
