Shillong, Jul 25: Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon today met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and requested his intervention on several key issues that includes the long pending demand for immediate implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya and inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.
In his memorandum to Shah, Syngkon requested the grant of ILP to Meghalaya, citing concerns about the growing influx of migrants and demographic pressure on the state’s indigenous communities and that the system is already in force in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland.
The MP also urged the Union Home Minister to support the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule, highlighting its importance as a symbol of Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage.
Further, Syngkon requested preferential employment opportunities for local youth in para-military establishments and installations located in Meghalaya, particularly for Group ‘C’ and other support staff positions.
He also sought support for granting Institute of National Importance (INI) status to NEIGRIHMS in order to elevate its academic and service excellence.
Asserting the importance of air connectivity, Syngkon requested the restoration and strengthening of air connectivity from Shillong Airport (Umroi) to key destinations in the North Eastern region.
He also requested the upgradation of the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (ITTM), Shillong Centre, into a full-fledged independent institute with expanded academic, training, and incubation capacity.
