A complaint has been lodged with the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes against Sushil Guru and YouTube content creator Raghav Sharma for circulating defamatory, communal and inflammatory content that vilifies the tribal communities of Meghalaya.
Enlang Sawian, an advocate and member of the Hynñiewtrep Youths Council (HYC), submitted a representation to the commission seeking urgent intervention and legal action against the dissemination of offensive and malicious content published on digital platforms.
The complaint alleges that on June 13 a video was uploaded on Sharma’s YouTube channel, @Supertalks, featuring Sushil Guru, who claimed to be an astrologer, making derogatory statements about the tribal communities of Meghalaya, including assertions that they practice human sacrifice and cannibalism.
Sawian stated that the video has been amplified through online news publications and social media channels, disseminating hate speech to a wide digital audience. He emphasised that the content is not only inaccurate but also deliberately crafted to incite prejudice and contempt toward the indigenous Scheduled Tribe populations of Meghalaya.
The complaint cites multiple provisions under criminal, constitutional, and human rights jurisprudence.
Sawian urged the commission to take suo motu cognisance of the matter, investigate the conduct of the individuals and media platforms involved and issue directions to take down or restrict access to the impugned video and related articles, implement stricter monitoring and flagging systems for communal content targeting Scheduled Tribes, issue summons to the concerned individuals, recommend penal action under the BNS and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, recommend issuance of a public apology and retraction of the content, grant symbolic and exemplary compensation to the affected tribal community and advocate for institutional safeguards to prevent recurrence of such digitally-enabled hate campaigns targeting tribes.
