Tura hosted the trophy showcase for the 134th Durand Cup, at the PA Sangma Stadium on Saturday.
The roadshow was flagged off from the stadium in Dakopgre, passed through key locations in Tura, including Nazing Bazar, Araimile, Tetengkol, Hawakhana, the DC Office and culminating at the Super Market Complex.
West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal highlighted the prestige and legacy of the Durand Cup, tracing its history back to the British era. He highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting sports by providing proper infrastructure and national-level exposure to youth.
The event was attended by District Sports Officer Saljagring M. Marak, celebrated footballer Sachin R. Marak, and Subedar Rohit Das of the Indian Armed Forces. The Tribal National riders also added to the excitement and enthusiasm of the occasion.
Asia’s oldest and India’s most prestigious football tournament. is set to begin on July 23.
This year for the first time ever, the Durand Cup is being played across five states – West Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur. Meghalaya’s matches will be held at the JN Stadium here for the second consecutive year.
