Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the relevance of ancient Khasi values in modern governance and policy-making, citing five core values that promote sustainable growth and development.
Sitharaman was addressing a gathering at Lariti – the international centre for performing arts and culture in the city.
She highlighted five key Khasi maxims that resonate deeply with the core values of responsible governance such as, “Ka tip briew ka tip blei” (know God, know man first), “Mei ramew ryngkew u basa” (reverence for nature, righteous earning, “Ka kamai ia ka hok” (earn righteously), community respect: “Ka tip kur tip kha” (respect your kinship and community) and common good: “Ka bhalang Ka imlang” (what you do for the common good).
Sitharaman said these principles can provide a moral and sustainable framework for modern business and governance, aligning with global efforts towards sustainable development and India’s values like, “Vasudaiva Kutumbakam” (the entire world is one family).
The Minister also lauded Meghalaya’s development efforts, noting that the state has fully utilized the centre’s Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) fund. She highlighted the importance of SASCI in building capital assets, generating local employment, and benefiting core sectors like steel and cement.
Meghalaya has completed 91 centrally-sponsored projects worth Rs. 1239 crore and has 35 ongoing projects worth over Rs. 1000 crore. The state is also building several roads, bridges, and other important capital assets with the centre’s assistance.
