Residents of Maikhuli village took to the streets on Friday in protest against the border settlement signed between Meghalaya and Assam.
Maikhuli is one of the areas in dispute and residents are furious that land precious to their livelihood, namely a fish pond, has been signed over to Assam.
The villagers took to the streets carrying banners and placards demanding the Meghalaya government to reclaim the fish pond, which according to the residents, has been the rightful property of Maikhuli.
According to the locals, fish farming has flourished and revenue generated from it has supported the local school and other community needs. They said that the community has maintained and ensured its upkeep for over 50 years.
Speaking to reporters, headman of Maikhuli Nicholas Marak and former headman Heniton Marak stated that all residents are united to not part with the fish pond.
The leaders said the government has never responded to their numerous pleas, which were submitted to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
The residents said under any circumstances they are prepared to take any necessary steps to reclaim the fish pond.
