A teenage girl and two men suspected of stealing earrings from schoolgirls have been arrested by police.
One of the blatant and brazen crimes was captured on CCTV footage that has since gone viral.
In the first case, an FIR was filed by the victim’s mother on June 18. In it, the mother, a resident of Mawlai Nongkwar, said that between 1:30pm and 2pm that day, her 9-year-old daughter was coming home from school when a female came up behind her on the path along the Wahumkhrah River.
The suspect engaged the girl in conversation by asking her questions about a particular boy. The suspect then followed the girl up to Mawlai Nongkwar Block 2 and then forcefully removed the girl’s earring before running away.
Two days later, an FIR was filed by a woman in Mawlai Nonglum that between 4pm and 4:30pm of June 20 three unknown persons – one female and two males – approached her house while her 9-year-old daughter was playing outside. The female suspect then forcefully removed one of the girl’s earrings and fled.
Today three suspects were arrested by Mawlai police. The female is a 16-year-old girl and thus cannot be named for legal reasons. The two men were identified by police as Mebanker Jyrwa (23) of Jaiaw Lansonalane and Charles Myrthong (20) of Riatsamthiah.
The stolen earrings were recovered after the suspects led police to a jewellery shop in Mawbah.
