The citizens of Meghalaya woke up to a shocking breakthrough on Monday, as Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife of Raja Raghuvanshi, was apprehended in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, in connection with her husband’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
This news – although tragic in nature, brought a sense of relief to the citizens of the state – who were vilified by national media – some even going to the extent of saying that of tagging the state as “Crime prone hills”.
The national media and family members of both Raja and Sonam even went to the extent of blaming the police and the government alleging the state’s institutions of ineptness.
A city resident Terence Paswet, said that he was relieved for sure after hearing the news that the wife was apprehended. He said the Sohra incident was very concerning for him, understanding that incidents can also happen with the people of the state elsewhere.
S.Barua has demanded an apology in national media for defaming the state and putting the state’s name in bad reputation.
Jopborlang Kharbuli, thanked the police department. He said all the teams involved right from the search operations, did an incredible job.
Another citizen of the city who wants to remain anonymous said that with the arrests the state of Meghalaya was vindicated. “Glad to see the police working hard,” she said
Social activist Agnes Kharshiing said that the citizens of the state were sad over the murder of Raja, a tourist and concerned about his missing wife.
“But this morning’s news really shook me and I was wondering how the killers took his life. SIT did a good job,” Kharshiing said.
She also said that the team who went down to find Raja after the drones detected him should also be applauded.
Kharshiing also said that the police still need to find out where these people were staying before the murder and what mode of transportation they used.
The comments sections of Highland Post on social media were filled with praises for the Meghalaya police.
“…Credibility and reputation of the state is restored. But further strict vigil is in need of the hour to make this state a most sought after tourist destination,” a facebook user wrote.
“Meghalaya Police, you have done a commendable job. The criminals are not from Meghalaya. Proved…” Uttora Sangma said.
Social media users said Meghalaya police did not heed to the allegations made against the department but showed results, thereby saving the dignity of the state and the people of Sohra.
