Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma has accused both the state and central governments of negligence stating their failure to prioritise resolution to the crisis in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is a “disturbing indifference”.
He said the turmoil engulfing NEHU is rapidly damaging the academic environment and reputation of one of the region’s premier institutions.
“There is no visible effort from the government to resolve the issue. Every day, we see news of the unrest, and it is having a direct bearing on the entire academic climate of the state,” the former chief minister said, adding, “Today, medical education, professional education — all are in a mess. And the situation in NEHU only adds to this growing crisis.”
Dr Sangma accused those in power of using diversionary tactics to shift public focus away from pressing issues like the NEHU crisis. “What is the responsibility of the government? When every sector is important, we must set priorities based on the challenges we face. But instead of addressing this crisis, we see political and social posturing aimed at distracting innocent citizens.”
Calling the situation at NEHU “deeply unfortunate,” Dr Sangma urged both the Meghalaya government and the Centre to take immediate and coordinated action. “It is their joint responsibility to come together and identify the root causes behind the unrest. Delays in resolving this issue have already created uncertainty for students and severely tarnished the reputation of an institution we have long taken pride in,” he said.
Dr Sangma warned that the prolonged crisis is jeopardizing not only the academic futures of hundreds of students but also the image and legacy of NEHU, which has historically been regarded as a prestigious centre of learning in the Northeast.
“Is NEHU not a university we should all be proud of? Is it not essential that both the State and Union governments act swiftly to protect its name and legacy?” he questioned.
While refraining from detailing the alleged “irritants” responsible for the crisis, Dr. Sangma stated, “I do not want to elaborate on the internal issues because it is unpleasant. But I urge both governments — please act now. Resolve this issue once and for all and ensure the name and fame of NEHU is not allowed to be defaced.”
