Police recently arrested five Bangladeshis for illegally entering into India.
On January 17 police conducted a check at Umkaber village under East Khasi Hills and intercepted one tourist vehicle (ML 05A T/C 0008) driven by one Romeo Nongtnger that was carrying the five.
The Bangladeshi nationals have been identified as Sujan Ali, Md Jhahidur Islam, Solemon Uddin, Subel Mia and Hriday Hussain.
With the latest arrests, the number of Bangladeshis trying to illegally enter India since January 1 this year has gone up to nine.
On New Year’s Day, Meghalaya police arrested four Bangladeshi nationals. Those four had also been travelling in a tourist taxi driven by a local tribal.
Meanwhile, yesterday the BSF thwarted multiple smuggling attempts to smuggle various contraband items to Bangladesh through the international border.
Acting on specific intelligence input, BSF troops launched a series of operations in East Jaintia Hills and West Garo Hills and seized a substantial haul of illegal goods such as four cannula sets, cough syrup, cattle, blankets, sugar, zeera, chocolate, and a TATA truck used for transporting the contraband items.
The total value of the seized items was estimated at Rs 52.76 lakh.
The confiscated goods have been handed over to the customs and police stations for further investigation and legal action.
