Ri Bhoi District is set to witness the emergence of a landmark initiative with the foundation stone laid for the ‘Ri Bhoi Bamboo Park’, the first of its kind in Meghalaya.

The project was inaugurated at Mawtnum village today by James PK Sangma, Chairman of the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

Addressing the gathering, Sangma underscored the transformative potential of bamboo, often referred to as “green gold.”

“Bamboo has the potential to revolutionize livelihoods and generate substantial revenue, much like gold. However, its true essence lies in its sustainability,” he stated.

Sangma also commended the project’s key promoters, Badhok Nongmalieh and Kamai Nongmalieh, for their vision and dedication. He highlighted the indispensable role of community involvement, noting that the success of any industry hinges on active local participation.

“The collaboration with the dorbar shnong of Mawtnum village sets a commendable precedent,” Sangma stated.

According to him this initiative will inspire other entrepreneurs to champion sustainable industries, thereby fostering a circular economy in Meghalaya.

The project’s innovative approach integrates sustainability with cutting-edge technology, positioning bamboo as a renewable resource with vast applications.

Sangma, while elaborating on its potential, cited products like ethanol and bamboo pellets, which offer eco-friendly alternatives to conventional charcoal and petroleum-based fuels.

He emphasised, “The global demand for bamboo and its derivatives is on the rise. As India progresses towards blending ethanol with petroleum to curb emissions, bamboo’s role in this initiative will significantly enhance its economic and environmental value.”

Sangma stated that Meghalaya’s rich biodiversity, home to diverse bamboo species, presents a unique opportunity to capitalise on this resource sustainably.

The MIDC Chairman also expressed his optimism about the Ri Bhoi Bamboo Park becoming a hub for economic growth, innovation, and environmental stewardship.

According to him the project aims to address pressing challenges such as deforestation and carbon emissions by promoting bamboo-based products as sustainable alternatives.

In his closing remarks, Sangma emphasised the broader implications of the initiative, stating, “This project will redefine the economic landscape of Ri Bhoi District and set a benchmark for sustainable development in Meghalaya.”

Rangbah Shnong of Mawtnum village Badhok Nongmalieh stated that this plan for the construction of Ri Bhoi Bamboo Park was initiated by the Dorbar Shnong with the ambition for sustainable development and to create employment opportunities among the young generation.

Nongmalieh said that the Ri Bhoi Bamboo Park symbolises a progressive vision for responsibly harnessing natural resources, balancing economic advancement with environmental sustainability and community welfare.
