A Bangladeshi national, who had illegally sneaked in to Meghalaya, after the political unrest in that country was detected in Shillong, the Border Security Force (BSF) said today.
Acting on specific input, the BSF apprehended the individual identified as 20-year old Munna Islam of Kashpur village, Bangladesh near the former Anjali petrol station.
According to the BSF, the person admitted to crossing the Indo-Bangladesh border in August 2024, after the political unrest in Bangladesh to seek better job opportunity in India.
He was handed over to Kench’s Trace Beat House after medical examination for further necessary legal action, the BSF added.
In a separate operation carried out in Baghmara under South Garo Hills and Dawki under East Khasi Hills, troops of BSF successfully foiled a smuggling attempt and seized contraband items, valued at Rs 3.74 lakh.
The items included fish, vacuum flasks, blankets, garlic, beedi and miscellaneous edible items. All the seized items have been handed over to the customs Office for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
