Shillong, Oct 13: The sit-in demonstration by SSA school teachers under the banner of All Meghalaya SSA School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA) has entered the thirteenth day today.
However, the State government has not called the agitating teachers for talks nor conceded to their demand.
The AMSSASTA members who have been protesting at Malki Ground here since October 1 are demanding for 100 per cent salary enhancement for 13,000 SSA school teachers in the State.
The AMSSASTA had already said that it wanted pay revision first instead of the proposed absorption of the teachers in the Education Department.
On October 9, a delegation of AMSSASTA met cabinet minister Paul Lyngdoh and submitted a memorandum on their demand.
Recently, the AMSSASTA had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention on their demand.
In its letter, the association urged Modi to provide support to the SSA school teachers considering the cost of living and inflation.
Stating that the last revision of the SSA school teachers’ salary was in 2026, the AMSSASTA said that the current salary ranges from Rs 9,200 to Rs 19,044 for lower primary SAA school teachers and Rs 9,900 to Rs 20,493 for upper primary SSA school teachers.
Officials in the Education Department said that the State government would require an additional amount of over Rs 300 crore for enhancing the salary of the SSA school teachers.
