Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has hailed the double win for Meghalaya at the Best Tourism Villages Competition 2024, the results of which were announced on Friday, World Tourism Day.
Umden and Mawphlang villages in Meghalaya were recognised as winners in the category of Craft and Heritage respectively. Umden is known for its traditional silk industry, while Mawphlang’s sacred groves strongly reinforce the importance of local heritage.
Lauding this achievement, Lyngdoh said, “It is a proud moment for the people of Meghalaya. After Kongthong’s recognition last year (it won bronze in the Best Tourism Village category at the National Tourism Awards), this honour adds another feather to our cap. This achievement has ensured that more people now know about the exquisite Eri silk of Umden and the ancient sacred forests of Mawphlang. These awards are a testament to our efforts in building sustainable tourism and fostering community development.”
Representatives from both villages who received the awards included Craig Alan Lyngdoh, Chief of Hima Mawphlang; Lamphrang Blah, Myntri of Hima Mawphlang; Tambor Lyngdoh, president of the Mawphlang Sustainable Tourism Society; Tander Tmung, weaver from Umden; Bishar Tmung, headman of Diwon, Umden; and Blandina Rympeit, weaver at the Integrated Village Cooperative Society Ltd.
