The Raj Bhavan, Shillong today bid warm farewell to outgoing Governor Phagu Chauhan, as he prepares to depart from Meghalaya.

The event was attended by the officers and staff who gathered to express their gratitude and best wishes.

Chauhan took charge as Governor of Meghalaya on February 13, 2023.

In his address, Chauhan thanked the staff of Raj Bhavan for their unwavering support and dedication throughout his tenure.

Heads of various departments at Raj Bhavan also delivered brief remarks, expressing their deep appreciation for the Governor’s leadership and contributions during his tenure.

On the occasion, a citation commemorating his tenure was presented to Chauhan, along with gifts as tokens of gratitude and respect for his dedicated service to the state.

Notable achievements during his term include the erection of the Mawbynna outside the main gates of Raj Bhavan on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Raj Bhavan.

Chauhan had to face protest from the opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in March 2023 when he addressed the House in Hindi, instead of English which is the official language of the State.

This year, during the first day of the budget session of the State Assembly the Governor spoke a few lines in Khasi and Garo language and his speech was interpreted into English.

VPP president and Nongkrem legislator Ardent M. Basaiawmoit had said that the party hopes that the government will take up the matter seriously and take up with the government of India that in the future they should send a governor who can communicate in the language the people understand.

Meanwhile, Chief Post Master General, NE Region, Sanjiv Ranjan, today called on the outgoing Governor and presented him with commemorative postage stamps to mark his tenure.

Chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya Branch, R.O. Wallang, along with Vice Chairman (E) Amelia Swer, General Secretary Andrew N. Sawian, Executive Member Ashok Goenka, and Executive Member Hansel H. Shabong also met Chauhan and presented a citation to him in recognition for his exemplary leadership and dedicated service as the President of the Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya State Branch.

The citation highlighted his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment, which have significantly contributed to the advancement of humanitarian causes and the betterment of the community.

Former Karnataka minister Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar will be sworn-in as the new Governor of Meghalaya tomorrow at 4:30 pm.
