The residents of Mawryngkneng village have expressed concern over the incompletion of a power substation, which was meant to cater to the citizens in the area.
The 33/11 KV power substation situated in the village is supposed to serve around 4,000 households in Mawryngkneng and adjoining villages.
The project was sanctioned in 2019 and work started the same year. It is being implemented by the Powergrid.
“Five years hence it is sad to say that the project cannot be completed till date,” Sirdar of Mawryngkneng, Peter Lawai, said.
Lawai informed that a letter of complaint was recently sent to officials of Powergrid to request them to restart the project, which came to a halt in 2023 for reasons unknown to the villagers.
“We want the government and the Powergrid to provide clarification as to why they stopped this project,” Lawai said, adding that the area experiences frequent power breakdowns.
Currently, Mawryngkneng draws power from Lad Nongkrem but in cases of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, the area experiences power cuts and it can take two or three days to get the connection restored.
“If they complete the project at the earliest then it will be helpful for the residents of Mawryngkneng and adjoining villages,” Lawai said.
He has requested the Power Minister to direct the Powergrid to resume the work on the abandoned project and complete it by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, the villagers are also peeved that a transformer that is supposed to cater to the localities of Iapshyndied and Main Road has been out of order for the last one month.
“No action has been taken to either repair the transformer or restore power supply to these localities,” Lawai said while demanding that it be repaired within a week’s time.
