South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai has requested the Public Works Department (PWD) for a facelift of all its roads falling within the constituency as they are in need of a comprehensive overhaul especially as the area is set to witness a boom in tourism.
Shullai met with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who holds the PWD portfolio, here today to submit his plea.
The PWD roads in his constituency have only been repaired “from time to time” over the last several years even though South Shillong has become more crucial to the state’s tourism economy as it hosts several homestays, lodges and guesthouses, Shullai said.
The ropeway project, which will eventually connect Shillong Peak to Madan Laban is also expected to lure significant numbers of tourists.
The roads thus need a “modern day facelift” for bituminous concrete roads.
“Such beautification of roads with proper demarcation for parking and other provisions will only ensure that the constituency will add glory towards the Smart City Scheme,” Shullai told Tynsong.
After the meeting, the MLA stated that the minister has instructed the Chief Engineer to prepare an estimate.
