In a bid to uphold their ancestral customs, the Dorbar Raid of Raid Marngar organised a traditional Raid Marngar fishing festival at Mawthlen today.
This event, deeply entrenched in Raid Marngar’s heritage, traditionally precedes the sowing season, drawing participation from all residents who engage in fishing, their success believed to be guided by fortune.
Thousands of residents from Raid Marngar, falling under Hima Mylliem Syiemship, enthusiastically partook in fish-catching, utilising the indigenous ‘jakhoi’ fishing net.
Richard Syiem, the traditional head of Raid Marngar, underscored the festival’s significance, emphasising its annual occurrence wherein prayers are offered for divine blessings upon farmers before the sowing season. Additionally, residents seek blessings for their well-being.
Before embarking on the fishing expedition, special prayers were conducted to invoke divine protection, ensuring the safety of participants amidst the festivities.
