NPP spokesperson Himalaya M. Shangpliang today said that the NPP alliance with the BJP is nothing new.
“There’s nothing new to say. When the NDA was formed, the NPP was already in alliance with the BJP in the Centre and you could also witness the same in the State with MDA. We had the BJP and the NPP and other parties like the UDP which formed the government in the State,” Shangpliang said.
He was speaking to media persons after welcoming members of the Congress, Trinamool Congress and UDP of Mawryngkneng constituency into the NPP in a function held at the party office in Lower Lachaumiere here.
Shangpliang also said that when the BJP decided not to set up candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha election in Meghalaya, the NPP had a lot of respect for the decision taken by the BJP, which respected the alliance so as to enable the NDA candidate – Ampareen Lyngdoh to have an easy victory.
He also said that the NPP has also raised issues relating to Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and Inner Line Permit (ILP).
According to him, the NPP stands for the people of the State and that there are local issues which the MPs and the party stand for.
“We are fighting for the recognition of the Khasi and Garo language under the Eighth Schedule and shall continue to do so. We are also pursuing the resolution passed by the Assembly on the ILP and therefore, because of the wisdom of the leadership in the NPP the CAA has been exempted in the State,” Shangpliang said.
