Sitting Congress MP Vincent H. Pala will file his nomination papers on March 26 for the upcoming Lok Sabha election from Shillong parliamentary constituency.
Similarly, Voice of the People Party (VPP) candidate Ricky A J Syngkon will file his papers on March 26.
Due to the likelihood that large number of party supporters may come and accompany Syngkon at his filing of nomination papers, the VPP has decided that only party leaders would go to the Deputy Commissioner’s office here to accompany the party candidate so that there would be no congestion and disruption to movement of traffic in the city.
Reports also said that Congress candidate for the Tura Lok Sabha seat, Saleng Sangma is likely to file his nomination papers on March 26 at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Tura.
Meghalaya will go to polls on April 19 to elect the MPs for both Shillong and Tura seats.
So far, two candidates have filed their nominations. They include NPP candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh and independent candidate Peter Shallam. Both of them filed their papers on March 22.
The last day of filing nomination for the first phase of the election is March 27. The scrutiny will be done on March 28 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 30.
The seats that are going to polls in the first phase on April 19 include thirty-nine seats of Tamil Nadu, 12 seats of Rajasthan, eight seats of Uttar Pradesh, six seats of Madhya Pradesh, five seats each in Uttarakhand, Assam and Maharashtra, four seats of Bihar, three seats of West Bengal, two seats each in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and one seat each in Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.
The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be conducted in seven phases in the country, while the counting will take place on June 4.
