In different operations, conducted yesterday, alert troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya successfully thwarted illegal smuggling attempts along the India-Bangladesh border by seizing sugar, medicines and Indian currency.
Acting on specific information, BSF troops conducted a special operation near Kanta junction, Umsyiem, under East Khasi Hills. During the operation, the BSF seized over 15 tonnes of sugar meant for smuggling to Bangladesh. Unidentified miscreants hiding in the jungle hurled stones and verbally abused the BSF personnel while they were retrieving the seized items. Fortunately, no injuries occurred but there was damage to a BSF vehicle. The confiscated sugar was handed over to the local police station for further necessary legal action.
In another operation, BSF troops posted at the Naljuri border outpost seized a huge quantity of medicines, worth Rs 14 lakh, while being smuggled to Bangladesh in West Jaintia Hills.
Apart from the above operation, 193rd Battalion jawans of Rajapara border outpost detected some suspicious movements of Bangladeshi miscreants. When BSF troops challenged the miscreants, they fled towards Bangladesh by taking advantage of darkness, hilly terrain and thick vegetation. On searching the area, BSF troops recovered a bag containing Indian currency of value over Rs 7 lakh. The seized Indian currency was handed over to Gumaghat police station and an FIR was lodged for further investigation. The Indian currency is suspected to be linked to payments for smuggled goods from India to Bangladesh.
