Meghalaya has seen the increase of voters by 3,24,384 in the last five years since the previous Lok Sabha elections in 2019.
The total number of electors in the final electoral rolls released last week is 22,17,100.
The final electoral rolls after the conduct of the special summary revision with reference to January 1, 2024 as the qualifying date for all 60 Assembly constituencies have been published on January 5.
The special summary revision of electoral rolls was conducted as part of preparation for the Lok Sabha elections expected to be held between April and May this year.
Meghalaya has two Lok Sabha seats – Shillong and Tura.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the total number of voters in the State is 18,92,716. These include 9,36,579 males and 9,56,137 females.
Meghalaya went to polls in the first phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on April 11, 2019.
Vincent H. Pala of Congress won the Shillong Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 1,52,433 votes by defeating Jemino Mawthoh of UDP. Pala secured a total of 4,19,689 votes.
Agatha K. Sangma of NPP won the Tura Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 64,030 votes by defeating Dr. Mukul Sangma of Congress. Agatha secured a total of 3,04,455 votes.
For the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, three political parties have announced their candidates for both the seats.
Voice of the People Party (VPP) was the first to announce its candidate for the Shillong seat. VPP general secretary Dr. Ricky A J Syngkon has already started his campaign in several constituencies.
The ruling NPP has named cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh as the candidate from Shillong seat and sitting MP Agatha Sangma for the Tura seat.
UDP, which is a part of the ruling coalition, has decided to field former HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin from the Shillong seat. The party is yet to decide on the Tura seat.
