Dylan Robby Jones Syiem, the Planning Officer for Disability Affairs in the Government of Meghalaya, on Saturday unveiled the Unique Disability ID project, marking a significant milestone in the empowerment of individuals with disabilities.
Syiem highlighted the implementation of the Rights for Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 and the introduction of a standardized disability certificate known as the Unique Disability ID project.
“The Unique Disability ID is now issued to each person with disabilities, marking a crucial step towards inclusivity,” Syiem remarked during the announcement.
The initiative has already encompassed over 80 percent of the disabled population in the state, signifying a substantial coverage within the disability community.
Syiem elaborated on the strategic deployment of trained personnel across districts, known as Disability Empowerment Facilitators.
These facilitators serve as assets, enabling smoother access to services and provisions for individuals with disabilities. Furthermore, the establishment of District Resource Centers across five districts within the state aims to cater to the diverse needs of those with disabilities.
Collaborative efforts between the Disability Affairs Office, District Social Welfare Officers, medical students, and District Medical Health Officers in all districts are integral to implementing interventions and fostering a supportive environment for individuals with disabilities.
This collaborative approach seeks to enhance accessibility to resources, services, and interventions crucial for the well-being and empowerment of individuals with disabilities across Meghalaya.
The introduction of the Unique Disability ID project and the holistic approach toward disability empowerment signify Meghalaya’s commitment to fostering an inclusive society, ensuring that individuals with disabilities have equitable access to opportunities and resources.
