A Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participations (SVEEP) programme to educate young electorates on the importance of the right to vote and to encourage enrolment was held at the St. Xavier’s College, Umoid in South West Khasi Hills district today.
The programme was organised by the office of the Deputy Commissioner (Election) and was attended by district officials, teacher and students of the college.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Steveford Marweiñ stressed on the need of establishing a “wall of democracy” at the college campus to display election-related materials in order to encourage students to enroll for voter ID and participate in voting.
He also spoke about the Voters Helpline app, a comprehensive app for Voters to search their name in the electoral roll, submit form for voter registration and modification, request for correction, etc.
Assistant System Engineer (ASE) I. Diengdoh highlighted that through the SVEEP programme awareness on Electronic Voting Machine and Voters – Verified Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT) are conducted for the students to get firsthand knowledge of its function and also to generate clearer understanding on the credibility, transparency of the Electronic Voting Machine and Voters – Verified Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT).
As part of the programme, a health camp and awareness on mental health was also organised by the office of the District Medical and Health Officer. Students were also familiarised on the function of the electronic voting machine (EVM) and voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT).
The other highlights of the programme include tug of war and the traditional game of Mawpoiñ competitions conducted by the District Sports Officer.
