Shillong Lajong FC earned their second straight win in the I-League with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Delhi FC at First Ground, Polo, here today.
The win takes the Reds to fourth place in the standings, now with 9 points after five games. This puts them level with Aizawl FC on points but Lajong have a healthier goal difference (+3 to +1).
Delhi FC had gained promotion to this season’s I-League after winning the Second Division League earlier this year. Lajong joined them as runners-up of the same tournament.
In the battle of two promoted sides, Senegalese striker Abdou Karim Samb opened the scoring for Lajong in the 24th minute. Delhi got back on level terms in the 60th minute through Gaurav Rawat, who netted two goals in his side’s sensational 5-1 win over Aizawl last week. However, local boy Phrangki Buam ensured a win for the hosts with his 82nd minute strike.
Delhi FC, meanwhile, are sixth in the table, with 7 points from five outings, though they could drop further down depending on the result of today’s other fixture between Churchill Brothers and TRAU.
For their next assignment, also at home, Lajong will play against bottom side TRAU on Saturday and should expect to win that contest.
