Members of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) today met the woman victim who was stabbed by her husband.

The members met the victim who is recuperating in the Shillong Civil Hospital. They later met her daughter, who was a witness to the incident, at her home.

However, the MSCW members refused to divulge the details of the meeting even as there are reports that the commission will re-look into the case.

Till filing of this report the accused husband has not been arrested since he is reportedly absconding.

However, in a brief interaction with the media the daughter said that the accused entered the house on November 1 evening, took some of his belongings and left.

In the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the victim at the Laban Police Station she stated that she was stabbed by the accused Suresh P Singh during an argument after she had asked for money to buy groceries.

It may be mentioned that the Highland Post had reported that the woman had been subjected to domestic violence for years and police has never registered an FIR. She also said Singh is a repeat offender and has powerful links.

The victim also alleged that Singh was entertaining other women in the house when she was out in Guwahati to accompany her children for coaching classes for higher studies.

In September last she was allegedly attacked by Singh and received three stitches on her elbow. Even then, the woman said, her FIR was never registered by the Laban Police Station.

According to sources, some years back she had sought the help of the State Women’s Commission. The case was kept on hold after she had left the city with her children.

On this, the woman said in March 2017 the commission had sent her for psychological counselling.

“I had refused because I was not even mentally ill and I have to take care of my children who were very young and we stayed in Guwahati for them to pursue with their studies. He (husband) then used the note from the commission telling people that I was not mentally stable,” she alleged.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case against Singh under Section 324 of the IPC.

East Khasi Hills has reported five domestic violence cases so far this year.
