The Golden Jubilee celebration of Seng Khasi College, Shillong concluded yesterday with an air of anticipation and nostalgia, as attendees witnessed the culmination of a remarkable journey of the institution.
Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLAs Adelbert Nongrum and Lakmen Rymbui attended the celebration as guests.
Lyngdoh in her address, commended the commitment of the college in shaping young minds and for upholding values of knowledge, diversity and community service over the past 50 years.
As the State is making efforts to get recognition of its local languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution the Minister said, “We must ensure that we will be able to be empowered with a language that is recognized by the government of India. We are fighting for this. However, in preparation for all the documentation that is required, the government of Meghalaya would expect Seng Khasi College to be one premier institute that will help us present our unique case to the Government of India.”
She urged the college to develop innovative library facilities, codify and record the classic Khasi songs, and continue to conserve the Khasi language.
Nongrum recalled the journey of the college and its role in nurturing generations of leaders and professionals.
The closing ceremony was a blend of tradition and contemporary celebrations. Cultural performances showcased the rich heritage of Meghalaya.
The event also featured an award ceremony honouring outstanding students, faculty and staff members who had contributed significantly to the growth of the institution.
