The toll plaza at Lumshnong along the national highway 6 in East Jaiñtia Hills will remain shut until the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) decides to restore and repair the deplorable road.
This was stated by the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Narpuh Circle who has been up in arms against the NHAI for its failure to maintain the national highway, which connects Assam, Manipur and Tripura.
The toll plaza in Lumshnong was under lock and key several times mainly to put pressure on the repair and maintenance of the national highway. The closure was again made by the public supported by the KSU on August 8.
Members of the union led by organising secretary, S.Lapasam who yesterday inspected the road from Mynkre to Malidor said that nothing has been done by the NHAI ever since a public protest was held on August 8.
“This adamant attitude by the NHAI will prompt another public protest and we will not be a mute spectator because commuters have the right to good roads. Therefore, we the toll plaza at Lumshnong will remain shut until the authority completes the repair of about 70 per cent of the stretch,” Lapasam said.
The KSU said the monsoon is an excuse because even during the winters, the NHAI has never repaired the NH 6 leaving hundreds of pool-like craters.
