As part of the commemoration of 75 years of Indian independence and the country’s rich history, diverse population, culture and achievements, a memorial dedicated to Sngap Sing Syiem, a renowned freedom fighter of Hima Maharam, was unveiled.

The programme was organised by the office of the Mawkyrwat Block Development Officer under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on the theme ‘Mera Maati Mera Desh’ at the Amrit Sarovar site in Sakwang.

LT Tariang, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Project Director DRDA of South West Khasi Hills, was the chief guest and unveiled the plaque that has been dedicated to Syiem.

Speaking on the occasion, Tariang said that the programme was organised with a view to spread the feeling of patriotism throughout the nation and on the efforts that are being undertaken to implement policies, commitments and progress across different sectors in the district.

He highlighted upon the successful implementation of PMAY and MGNREGA schemes in the district by stating that there were about 30 beneficiaries in Sakwang and Pyndensakwang villages who have benefitted from the PMAY (housing) scheme and around 20,000 households a year have benefitted from MGNREGA (rural employment).

He also informed that Mawkyrwat block has been identified as one of the five best performing Community and Rural Development blocks for its effort to ensure saturation of various schemes under convergence with PMAY-G. He also stresses on the need of registration for Aadhaar card, in the absence of which many benefits will be lost to the public.

He encouraged students on the need to conserve and preserve the environment where it requires each one of us of our collective responsibilities as individuals in shaping the destiny of our country.

This programme was also celebrated at Dirang where Deputy Commissioner Tableland Lyngwa was the chief guest in the presence of L Kynjing, Sub-Divisional Officer for Ranikor, S Marwein, Block Development Officer of Ranikor, and others.
