Another 12 persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the Tura violence on July 24, police said today.

The total tally of arrested persons has now reached 35. Among those arrested are social activist Jaynie N Sangma, a home guard volunteer Galnan B Marak.

According to police, Sangma was arrested for a series of WhatsApp posts in a group called Debate Hours. Others are Sengbath M Sangma, Jebina G Momin, Salseng R Marak, Michael N Sangma, Dilseng Ch Marak, Galchi M Sangma, Mebi R Marak, Tengbat A Sangma and Sanju T Sangma.

Meanwhile, all the arrested persons including Trinamool leader Richard M Marak, were produced before the district sessions court today.

The violence that lasted for around three hours resulted in injuries to 18 police personnel and damage to 21 vehicles while Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was having a meeting with the representatives of the ACHIK, who were staging a hunger strike demanding implementation of a backlog policy and to declare Tura as the winter capital of the state.

The West Garo Hills district administration has announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 for any person providing information on the instigators behind the Tura incident.

“Any person who provides information to us (Magistrate or the Police officials) of the whereabouts of the key instigators leading to their arrest or aid for the district administration will be rewarded an amount of Rs 10,000 from the side of district administration and duly recognised for their effort towards maintenance of law and order. The identity of the person giving the information will be kept secret,” the district administration said.
