The state government has been communicating with the National Testing Agency (NTA) over the need for more Common University Entrance Test (CUET) examination centres to be set up in Meghalaya.
Recently, student groups have raised concerns that some Meghalaya students are being allotted exam centres outside the state, adding to their expenses and eating into their time.
Although Meghalaya has received an exemption from the application of CUET in the state’s higher education institutions, this does not apply to Meghalaya students who want to pursue their studies outside the state.
Today, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma informed that the state government has already communicated to the NTA about the need for more local CUET centres.
“We have still got an exemption for 2023-24 but students will be appearing for CUET this year,” the minister said. “We will aggressively work with the NTA and the government of India so that enough centres will be placed across the state”.
Meanwhile, the Garo Students Union (GSU) had met Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma seeking rescheduling of either the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) or CUET exams to be held this month as the dates were clashing.
Responding to this, the Education Minister said that he had raised the issue with the NEHU Vice-Chancellor and NEHU has rescheduled the exams.
