The Meghalaya High Court has praised the induction of school buses in Shillong as part of the effort to ease traffic congestion in the city.
During the hearing on the PIL filed by Philip Khrawbok Shati today, the State government submitted a status report on the immediate, short-term, mid-term and long-term proposals to ease traffic congestion in the city.
After seeing the report the division bench of the High Court lauded the State government for taking an initiative at a short time to procure a large number of buses for ferrying school children and to ensure that individual cars do not have to drop the children to school and pick them up thereafter.
On the worry by parents regarding the safety of their children, additional advocate general K. Khan said that besides CCTVs fitted in the school buses, an App known as Real-Time Passenger Information System (RTIPS) has also been circulated to parents to follow at any moment the location of the school buses and what may be going on inside such buses.
“The system called Real-Time Passenger Information System is almost revolutionary and should allay all misgivings a concern parent or guardian may have as to the security of a school-going child travelling in a bus,” the high court said.
The court also asked the State government to continue its efforts to ease traffic congestion in the city including completion of the proposed flyover between Rilbong and Jhalupara.
Further, the high court asked the state government to file its report on the immediate and short-term measures taken on these matters at the next hearing to be held on July 7.
