Bethany Society’s Phramer unit, supported by Jan Vikas Samiti of Varanasi, held the ‘We Ring the Bell Campaign’ at Kyndong Tuber RC LP School and St Claret Secondary School to ensure educational initiatives for children with disabilities.
Both campaigns, on April 20 and 24 respectively, saw the participation of school students and teachers.
The Ring the Bell campaign is the initiative of the Liliane Foundation. The full participation of students in this campaign draws the attention of the community, local governing body, media, etc to the enrolment of children with disabilities in educational institutions.
Although inclusive education is a growing reality globally, in India it is often the case that children with disabilities are unable or not allowed to attend school due to non-accessibility, exclusion, etc.
The aim of the campaign is to increase enrolment and retention of children with disabilities in mainstream schools; gain community and parents commitment to ensure inclusive education; ensure children with disabilities in schools are learning with their peers; organise rallies to spread awareness on social inclusion and the right to education of disabled children; make the school accessible and child friendly; reduce dropouts of disabled children in regular schools due to lack of accessible toilets ramps, child friendly classrooms; create awareness on inclusive education created among school authorities, teachers, students and the communities.
