The nominee of the ruling MDA-2, Timothy D. Shira is set to be elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly tomorrow which is the first day of the budget session.

The opening day of the budget session will begin with the address by Governor Phagu Chauhan, introduction of government bills, and election of the Deputy Speaker.

Since the 14-member opposition has not fielded any candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker, the deck is clear for Shira to take over the post for the second consecutive term.

The budget session of the Assembly will have seven government businesses and two private members’ businesses.

On March 21, the members of the House will debate on the Governor’s address followed by a reply by the chief minister.

On March 22, there will be private members’ business where bills, motions and resolutions could be tabled.

On March 23, the House will vote on the Supplementary Demands for Grants. The House will also pass the Meghalaya Appropriation (No I) Bill 2023. On the same day, the chief minister will present the budget estimates for 2023-24.

On March 24, there will be private members’ business where members can move bills, resolutions or motions.

The general discussion on the budget will be held on March 27. On the same day, the chief minister will give his reply to the points raised by members.

On the final day of March 28, there will be government business which includes voting on the Demands for Grants, passing of the Meghalaya Appropriation (No II) Bill 2023, passing of government bills and election to financial committees.
