The ruling NPP has emerged as the single largest party by winning 26 seats out of 59 in the State Assembly elections.
UDP, an ally of the NPP emerged as the second largest party with 11 seats but drew a naught in the Garo Hills region. It had won only six seats in the 2018 polls.
The BJP, which had fielded all the seats, managed only two seats, from veterans like Sanbor Shullai who again won South Shillong and Alexander L. Hek in Pynthorumkhrah.
The Trinamool Congress which was seen as a formidable contender for the NPP managed to win only five seats in Songsak, Ampati, Nongthymmai, Dadenggre and Rajabala.
The Congress, which had pinned hope on greenhorns could manage only five seats even as its State president also three-time Shillong MP, Vincent H. Pala was defeated by new entrant of the NPP, Santa Mary Shylla.
The newly formed Voice of the People Party (VPP) won four seats, while the HSPDP, the People’s Democratic Front won two seats each. Two Independent candidates also emerged victorious.
Three exit polls said that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) may emerge as the second largest outfit, followed by the Congress and the BJP. The UDP may also emerge as a decisive factor in a closely contested election, as per the exit poll predictions.
Mentionably, elections were held for 59 of 60 seats in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly due to the sudden death of UDP candidate from Sohiong HDR Lyngdoh.
The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the rescheduled polling date for Sohiong.
