In a particularly large haul, the Border Security Force (BSF) seized 210 cattle from the international border in East Khasi Hills before they could be smuggled into Bangladesh.
The incident occurred on Sunday when, acting on a tip-off, personnel of the 4 Battalion BSF Meghalaya deployed in the area around Nayabazar confiscated the cattle in the forest area close to the village of Mawdang.
The cattle had been kept in improvised bamboo shelters
“Smugglers often make attempts to smuggle these cattle in small groups through unfenced patches during the night,” a BSF press release said today.
The cattle were handed over to Pynursla police for further action.
In East Khasi Hills alone, the BSF has seized 613 heads of cattle since the start of the year.
