The BJP has rounded on state Congress Party president and Shillong MP Vincent Pala for raising the issue of atrocities against minorities, given that it is the Congress that rules Chhattisgarh, which was the centre of recent attacks on Christians.
In a press release today from its state media cell, the Meghalaya BJP hit out at Pala for “trying to polarise the public and then blaming the BJP for it.”
The BJP, the release maintained, is only focused on ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ (Everyone’s Growth, Taking Everyone Along).
“No BJP scheme or policy has ever discriminated against people on the basis of their religion,” it added while stating that more than 2.5 lakh Meghalaya farmers are recipients of a central government annual grant.
Meghalayans, the majority of whom are Christians, have also benefited in tangible ways from the BJP, the party said citing other examples. “Most of these beneficiaries in Meghalaya are Christian and never has their religion been a hurdle in obtaining these benefits.”
The BJP also described the Congress Party’s rule of Chhattisgarh as “daft”, saying that Christians have come under attack and had to flee their homes.
