The number of registered voters in Meghalaya has risen by just shy of 50,000, the Chief Electoral Officer of Meghalaya, Freddy Roy Kharkongor, informed today.
The special summary revision (SSR) of 2023 began on November 9 last year and has now been finalised. There were 63,763 new electors who applied for enrolment but, after hearing claims and objections, the net increase was reduced to 49,915.
This means that the total number of electors in Meghalaya stands at 21,61,129, with females (10,92,326) outnumbering males (10,68,801) by 23,525. There are also two registered transgender voters and 3,844 service electors. These figures include 7,478 voters with disabilities.
Overall there has been a net increase of 2.36 per cent in the current electorate over the draft rolls as on November 9.
Against the 2018 figures, the total electorate registered an increase of 18 per cent, with 4, 29,062 new electors being added from 2018. Currently, the electoral population ratio stands at 64.53 percent, gender ratio is 1022:1000 and enrolment of 18-19 age groups is currently at 81,443. The total number of polling stations today has risen to 3,482 from the 3,083 of 2018.
“Purity of the electoral rolls is a major focus for the ECI and, factoring this aspect, 13,848 electors were removed from the electoral rolls on account of reasons such as death, shifting of address, etc,” the CEO’s press release informed, adding that the particulars of 40,700 electors were also corrected during this revision.
“The whole SSR process has been guided by the principles of ensuring purity, health, inclusiveness, integrity and transparency in the entire exercise. Periodic meetings were held at both the CEO level and at the level of DCs (Deputy Commissioners) with all political parties to ensure transparency in the overall SSR process,” the release said.
