Unidentified persons broke into the KJP Assembly Book Room in Jowai, located opposite the Thomas Jones Synod College and stole a two tonne safe that held cash worth Rs 52,000 and a mobile phone.
While the incident occurred on Friday night, it came to light only around 9:15 am today.
Incharge of the office, B. Tongper said he found the lock of the post office broken. He said the two tonne safe was attached to the wall with iron rods, but miscreants managed to cut them.
According to Tongper the safe was donated by church leaders and about 20 people had to carry it when it was brought to the office. “Therefore we suspect there are many involved in the crime as it is not possible to even lift the safe,” he said.
Tongper also said burglars even cooked meals inside the office.
Meanwhile, authorities have lodged an FIR and urged people not to buy the safe and to inform the police if identified or the office at mobile number 9436301389.
