All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) chief Mamata Banerjee is arriving here tomorrow for a two-day visit to prepare a roadmap for the Meghalaya Assembly elections due early next year.
During her visit, the West Bengal chief minister will be accompanied by AITC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and party in-charge of Meghalaya Dr. Manas Ranjan Bhunia.
Banerjee will address a party workers’ convention at the State Central Library here on December 13. She will also have a meeting with party leaders at Windermere in Umpling.
Trinamool Congress is currently the main opposition party in Meghalaya.
The elections to elect representatives to the 60-member House in Meghalaya is due before March 8.
Trinamool Congress leaders in the State said that Banerjee’s visit will boost the morale of the party workers ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections.
Currently, Trinamool Congress is enjoying a good amount of support in Garo Hills and few pockets in Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
The party is banking on anti-incumbency against the ruling government led by NPP and has also raised a number of issues concerning failures of the present government.
It may be mentioned that Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee visited Meghalaya last month and addressed a massive rally in Tura.
In November 2021, twelve Congress MLAs led by former chief minister Dr. Mukul Sangma merged with the Trinamool Congress. Senior legislator and former Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope was elected as the State party president.
Of the 12 MLAs who joined the Trinamool Congress last year, Himalaya M. Shangpliang resigned from the Assembly and the party last month reducing the strength of the party in the House to eleven.
Shangpliang who is joining the BJP said that he had nothing against the party but he was compelled to resign as his supporters felt that the party is yet to be accepted by the masses in his constituency.
