The seven border outposts along the Meghalaya border with Assam will be made operational from December 13.
According to sources, the Home Department has fixed December 13 as a tentative date for opening of the seven border outposts.
It may be mentioned that the State cabinet on November 29 approved the setting up of seven outposts along the border with Assam.
The decision came after a week of the Mukroh incident in which five villagers from Mukroh and one Assam forest guard died in firing by Assam police.
Two border outposts will be set up in Mukroh and Tiehwieh in West Jaintia Hills while the others will be set up in Mooriap in East Jaintia Hills, Rani-Jirang in Ri-Bhoi, Umwali, Lejadubi and Langpih in West Khasi Hills.
According to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, there will be an expenditure of around Rs 2 crore annually for operating one border outpost. So the total expenditure in operating the seven border outposts will be Rs 14 crore annually.
The existing border outposts in Patharkhmah and Kyrshai will be upgraded to police stations.
The cabinet has also decided to set up an outpost at Athiabari in West Khasi Hills.
