‘Govt keeping close eye on law & order situation’

Meghalaya is once again limping back to normalcy. The state witnessed a worrying law and order situation after six people were shot dead by Assam police on November 22 in Mukroh, West Jaiñtia Hills.
Mobile internet services were suspended in seven districts for six days and a majority of the shops in Shillong’s commercial hub of Police Bazar remained closed or only partially open due to apprehension of violence. In a few scattered incidents, police and civilians were attacked by mobs and petrol bombs and the burning of vehicles were reported in other corners of the state capital. Fear of such attacks led to the suspension of vehicles from Assam, including those carrying vital supplies, entering Meghalaya.
The situation is now returning to normal but Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today informed that the government is keeping a close eye on the law and order situation.
“We are seeing that the situation is calmer compared to before. But, of course, it doesn’t mean we can be complacent. So, we will ensure that we are vigilant and keep monitoring the situation,” stated Sangma.
The government came in for criticism for letting the law and order situation almost spiral out of control.
The CM urged the citizens, elders, civil society leaders and pressure groups and all the people of the state that this is an important phase for the state and that violence is not the way to move forward.
“We’re not achieving anything by being violent. The people who are suffering are our own people. And there’s no reason for us to do that, to make our own people suffer. Yes it’s a difficult time, but it’s the time we need to work together and move forward as a state and as people,” he added.
